(CMR) A Guyanese man, who was nabbed by authorities last week, had already begun setting up a drug trafficking enterprise in the Cayman Islands and had several of his mules arrested in Cuba. CMR had previously reported that Michelle Ann Hunter had been detained in Cuba after she was caught trafficking drugs through that country from Guyana. CMR sources have explained that Hunter was one of his Cayman mules that was recruited upon his arrival on the island.
Whendel Stewart (35) arrived in the Cayman Islands via Jamaica with intentions of setting up a drug trafficking business. Apparently he was to travel here with his wife in order to set up the illicit enterprise but she is said to have been detained by authorities elsewhere. Upon arriving on the island he initially moved into a house with some local contacts in the Northward area before moving to Newlands.
Exclusive sources further indicate that Stewart, who has an extensive criminal record, arrived into the Cayman Islands flushed with cash and drugs. He then recruited Michelle Hunter and others to assist him with bringing more drugs into the island.
Hunter is said to have traveled to Colombia – Guyana – Jamaica – Cuba with the intention of coming to Cayman after the Cuban leg of the trip. However, she was detained by Cuban authorities for drug trafficking. Sources indicate she has been sentenced to an 8-year sentence in a Cuban prison after her family traveled there to negotiate her sentence with Cuban officials.
Stewart had received a final extension on his visit to the Cayman Islands and was to leave the island around January 14th. However, he was picked up last week by CBC for overstaying and is now in police custody.
He was also facing charges in Guyana with his wife sometime last year. The outcome of that trial is not yet certain.
