(CMR) Police have confirmed that a 72-year-old woman from the United States died after experiencing difficulty while out snorkeling near Cemetery Beach on Sunday, 5 May.
This is the second water-related death of a visitor within days, as on Wednesday, 1 May, a visitor from New Zealand died while out snorkeling. Since the start of the year, several visitors have died in water-related incidents, a continuation of the traumatic trend of 2023.
According to the RCIPS, shortly after 10:30 a.m, Sunday, police and other emergency services responded to a report of a person in distress at Cemetery Beach, West Bay.
On arriving at the scene, police observed fire officers administering CPR on an unresponsive woman on the beach.
It was reported to police that the woman had been snorkeling with a family member when she experienced difficulty. Assistance was given by members of the public in the vicinity who helped bring the woman to shore, where CPR was administered until emergency services arrived and took over.
The woman was taken to George Town Hospital by ambulance, where she was pronounced deceased by the attending doctor.
Inquiries into the circumstances of the death are currently ongoing but are not believed to be suspicious at this time. The RCIPS expresses its condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
