(CMR) A 72-year-old man from Illinois, USA, was pronounced dead on Wednesday, 10 April, after he got into distress near Cemetery Beach on his way back from snorkeling with friends.
Reports from the police are that shortly after 11:30 am, emergency services responded to a report of a person in distress in the ocean in the vicinity of Cemetery Beach, West Bay.
When police arrived on the scene they observed EMS and Fire conducting CPR on a man, lying on the beach.
It was reported that the man was snorkeling with friends, when they decided to return to shore, and he got into distress on the way in. Persons on the beach helped bring the man ashore and conducted CPR, before the emergency services arrived and took over.
The man was transported to the hospital by ambulance where the was subsequently pronounced deceased by the attending doctor.
Last year, Cayman experienced a number of water-related deaths. So far this year, there have been a number of water-related deaths. This includes both locals and visitors. Last month, another senior from the US died in a water-related incident.
