(CMR) A worker in the government's beautification program NICE reportedly collapsed and died Monday morning, 15 April, during a briefing session.
“It is with deep sadness and heavy heart that we announce the passing of an individual at the morning briefing for the NICE Program today. The gentleman, whose identity will remain confidential pending family notification, tragically collapsed during the session,” the Ministry of Planning, Agriculture, Housing, Infrastructure, Transport & Development (PAHITD) stated in a release.
According to the Ministry, immediate emergency protocols were followed; supervisors promptly called 911 and administered CPR until the emergency services arrived. Despite these efforts, the individual unfortunately passed away shortly after their arrival.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased and pledge our full support during this difficult period. We respectfully request that the privacy of the family is honored as they navigate this tragic loss,” the Ministry added.
The NICE Program, initiated in 2015, focuses on enhancing the physical environment of the Cayman Islands and fostering community spirit.
“This tragic incident, occurring during our efforts to uplift the community, reminds us of the importance of togetherness in both celebration and sorrow,” the Ministry of PAHITD stated
The NICE program is open to unemployed Caymanians and the unemployed spouses of Caymanians who possess skills in repairs and maintenance, gardening, garbage collection, or cleaning parks, beaches, and roadside verges to become an integral part of this meaningful initiative.
While today is marked by sorrow, the Ministry said the NICE Project continues to stand as a symbol of our unity and the strength of our community. It is an endeavor that requires the approval and support of the Ministry of Planning, Agriculture, Housing, and Infrastructure each year.
The Ministry said it is committed to ensuring that all program environments are safe and supportive for all participants and that a full review of today’s incident will be conducted to prevent such occurrences in the future.
“We appreciate the swift response of our emergency services and thank our community for their support and understanding during this time. We ask the media and public to join us in respecting the privacy of the family at this time,” it further stated.
