(CMR) In the Cayman Islands, there is an average of two dog bite incidents per week, ranging in severity. With this week being National Dog Bite Prevention Week (April 7-13), the Department of Agriculture has provided some tips to keep our beloved pets and communities safe.
Dogs may bite for various reasons, including being in pain, being frightened, or due to lack of appropriate socialization/training.
Dogs allowed to roam or stray out of control are more likely to bite a member of the public, particularly when in packs. Responsible pet ownership can prevent many dog bite incidents from occurring. Here are some of the things you can do:
-Train and socialize your dogs – it is never too late to start!
-Keep dogs leashed in public spaces in accordance with the law.
-Ask first, pet second! Always ask the owner if you are allowed to pet their pup before doing so.
-Just like people, dogs have different personalities – some dogs do not like strangers or other dogs. If this describes your dog, consider investing in a bandana or vest stating this.
