(CMR) After scamming numerous people for countless years, Garfield Robb was finally sentenced to 5 years imprisonment today, 22 March.
Robb, who was found guilty of nine counts of obtaining property by deception last September, was sentenced to two years of hard labor for four of the offenses and three years for the remaining five offenses, with the sentences to run consecutively.
During the sentencing, the court heard that Robb showed no remorse for his actions, maintained he did nothing wrong, and said the media engineered the allegations against him.
When asked by the judge if he had anything to say before the sentence was handed down on Friday, Robb continued to maintain his innocence.
“I do not owe that kind of money,” he said, adding that he told his clients that he was sick, and they continued to call him, so he ignored their calls.
Robb said at one point, he was hospitalized for three months as he is a diabetic.
Justice Frank O. Williams, in handing down the sentence, said deterrence and rehabilitation had to be considered. He said the sentence should deter Robb from reoffending and others from committing similar crimes.
Justice Williams explained that while the offenses were committed separately and on different dates, sentences cannot be handed down for each offense as it would amount to 27 years at three years for each offense. As a result, the sentence has to be considered as a whole.
Looking at aggravating factors, Justice Willians said, “The offenses were not opportunistic but planned out.”
He added that Robb “showed a lack of remorse, made no effort to compensate victims over many years and has low empathy for victims.”
He also noted that the offenses were committed over seven years, with some lasting over several years.
Justice Williams also noted a breach of trust, with most of the victims responding to an advertisement. He, however, also considered that Robb had no previous similar convictions.
Justice Williams made a compensation order for approximately CI$15,400, as was requested by the crown. A confiscation order was also requested and granted by the court.
