(CMR) A social media frenzy erupted Friday evening after a cat's owner said the animal was stolen by two women; however, the women, visitors to the Cayman Islands, said that they rescued the cat.
The two women were seen on camera taking the cat; they claimed they took the cat to the Humane Society after it was seen roaming and was apparently in need of care.
However, the owner said the cat was not being neglected or abused but had a skin condition and was on their porch, where it spent most of its time since it turned up on their doorsteps.
CMR understands the cat, which was initially a stray, was rehoused after a neighbor who first took it in realized her son was allergic to it. The neighbor took the cat to the vet, where it was examined, given its shots, and spayed. However, due to the situation, the cat had to be left outside. It was then that the cat went to the home of its new owner.
The new owner said at the time when the cat was taken by the women, it was in no danger, was under shelter, had water, and was that it was watched from a ring camera.
She said she became aware of the cat's skin condition a few weeks ago but did not yet have the resources to address it. She explained that she also has a dog that was recently ill, for which care was sought.
The owner said she went home to see if the people who took the cat had left a note, but there was none, so she assumed the animal had been stolen. She believes the situation could have been handled differently if the women had left a note or had waited until someone was home to speak to before making a decision to remove the cat.
She said while they meant well, they went about it the wrong way.
