(CMR) Following the shooting of seven people at the Ed Bush Field on Sunday, 25 February, the National Security Council has requested an audit of the National CCTV program to assess its effectiveness in enhancing surveillance capabilities.
Her Excellency Governor Jane Owen presided over a special meeting of the National Security Council on Tuesday, 27th February, to discuss national security measures.
The Council, in addressing maritime security, also tasked Coastguard Commander Robert Scotland with developing an urgent plan to combat trafficking and illegal maritime activities.
During the session, the Commissioner of Police, Kurt Walton, provided updates on the Royal Cayman Islands Police Services investigation into the recent incident and outlined plans for a firearms amnesty.
Additionally, the Council agreed upon a comprehensive revision of the national security structure to enhance coordination among key departments. The Council also urged the exploration of changes to increase penalties for firearms offenses and gang-related activities.
Expressing appreciation, the Council thanked the Government and the Chamber of Commerce for their contributions to the Crime Stoppers award.
The meeting underscored a collaborative effort to address security challenges and implement effective strategies for the well-being and safety of the Cayman Islands and its people.
