(CMR) Local boutique hotel Palm Heights has seen another of their celebrity guests arrested for bringing in marijuana, their second guest to be arrested in less than a month.
Abdulbasti Basit Shittu, also known as the drag queen Dionne Slay, was arrested and charged after a small amount of ganja was discovered in his luggage when he arrived on the British Airways flight to the Cayman Islands on Tuesday, 1 August.
Shittu, who it believed had the ganja for personal use, was arrested by Customs and Border Control officers. Shittu was taken before Chief Magistrate Foldats and fined $500, and a conviction was recorded.
Just recently, American influencer Gigi Hadid was arrested after ganja was found in her luggage when she arrived on island. She was fined $1000; however, a conviction was not recorded.
There have been recent discussions about the disparity between fines and convictions in ganja-related cases, with some locals believing visitors are given more leniency in the courts.
