(CMR) A patient admitted to Health City Cayman Islands passed away on Sunday night as a result of self-harm. The facility confirmed that the patient was recently admitted to our East End facility for dialysis treatment. CMR received information early on Monday morning that the police were investigating a report of a self-inflicted injury in a healthcare facility on the island.
Independent CMR sources revealed earlier that the patient took a pair of scissors and cut his catheter bag resulting in his death. The scissors came from a grooming/shaving kit the patient had with him. He was due to be released tomorrow.
A tunneled hemodialysis catheter is a soft plastic tube that is inserted into one of the large veins in your neck or, occasionally, in your groin. This catheter gives your dialysis team access to your blood so that it can be filtered by the hemodialysis machine. Your blood is then returned to your body through the catheter.
The catheter is about the width of a standard pencil and twice as long. It will pass under your skin (tunneled) for a short distance, to the front of your chest (if it goes in through your neck), or the front of your thigh (if it goes in your groin) before coming out of the skin. The external part of the catheter may be kept in place with stitches. The part of the catheter running under your skin has a small cuff of material that helps your body to form scar tissue. This helps to reduce the risk of infection and keep the line in place after the stitches are removed.
Health City Cayman Islands shared their condolences to the family and loved ones during this difficult time.
They also confirmed that upon discovering the incident of self-harm, their medical team immediately took necessary action, including alerting the authorities. As a result of patient confidentiality and out of respect for the privacy of the patient and the patient’s family, they cannot reveal further information at this time, but they are cooperating with the relevant authorities.
