(CMR) The Department of Environment has confirmed that a video of seine net fishing, posted by CMR, was taken in the East End area and shows the sole license holder of a seine net in the Cayman Islands.
Many persons questioned the legitimacy of net fishing and the large quantity of fish that was being taken.
According to the DoE, the species of fish depicted in the video appears to be primarily Yellow Jacks which are not a controlled or generally threatened species in the Cayman Islands. Jacks and Goggle Eyes are the only 2 species of fish allowed to be taken under the seine net license.
The DoE said it does not have research for every individual species of fish in Cayman waters so currently, there is no specific data to inform restrictions on the number of Jacks or Goggle Eyes which may be taken at one time with a seine.
The licensing of seine nets is regulated through the National Conservation Council, which provides conditions that must be met to maintain a valid license. The National Conservation Act may be accessed at www.conservation.ky/the-national-conservation-law/
