(CMR) A Canadian woman who attempted to smuggle 18 pounds of ganja in false compartments of her suitcase on a Westjet flight from Canada to Cayman was sentenced to one year and six months in prison.
Toni Lee Danso was arrested after Customs and Border Control (CBC) officers found the drugs in the suitcase during immigration screening in February. Reports are that the officers, screening passengers, noticed a strong odor of glue coming from Danso’s luggage and did further examination of her luggage.
During the examination, officers found 18 packages of ganja hidden in a false compartment at the bottom of the suitcase.
During her arrest, she told officers she had no idea how the drugs got in her luggage, adding that she received the suitcase just two days before traveling to Cayman. However, when she appeared in Summary Court, she pleaded guilty.
An order of deportation has been made pending her release from prison.
