(CMR) A Tropical depression which is expected to start affecting the Cayman Islands this evening, has been upgraded to a tropical storm. Tropical Storm Ida formed in the Caribbean Sea on Thursday, and forecasters are warning it could rapidly strengthen into one of the strongest storms of the Atlantic hurricane season.
Ida had maximum sustained winds of about 40 mph Thursday as it formed near Jamaica. The storm is now located 130 miles from Grand Cayman.
According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, heavy rainfall is expected to produce significant flooding across the Cayman Islands, western Cuba, the Isle of Youth, and the northeastern Yucatan Peninsula.
