(CMR) The National Hurricane Center is advising that Tropical Depression Grace continues to move further south than forecast, and with the change in the track, there is now an increased probability that the Cayman Islands could be threatened by storm force winds in the coming days.
At 8 a.m. AST, the center of Tropical Depression Grace was located about 125 miles (200 km) southeast of Port Au Prince, Haiti. The depression is moving toward the west near 15 mph (24 km/h). A west to west-northwestward motion is expected over the next several days.
Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph (55 km/h) with higher gusts. Data from the NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicate that the minimum central pressure is 1008 mb (29.77 inches).
On the forecast track, the center of Grace will pass near the southern coast of Hispaniola today and tonight, and then between Jamaica, Cuba, and the Cayman Islands on Tuesday and Wednesday. Increased intensification is forecast to occur on Tuesday. Over Cuba, Jamaica, and the Cayman Islands….2 to 4 inches of rain with isolated maximum totals of 6 inches are expected through Thursday.
Boating interests in the Cayman Islands should monitor TD Grace closely and commence preparations to secure their vessels from the possible threat.
