(CMR) A 26-year-old Nicaraguan-Caymanian, Kesly Ebanks Martinez, has been arrested for careless driving after an early morning accident left 32-year-old American Kiarah Perkins Williams and Health Services Authority (HSA) medical ward nurse dead.
Ebanks Martinez is employed at Cayman National Bank as a Customer Service Representative and has been with the bank for over 4 years. Ebanks was driving the family vehicle of one of the passengers in the vehicle with him who was also injured.
Exclusive CMR sources have shared that she was preparing to leave the Cayman Islands to move to Arizona and was out celebrating with some individuals including a co-worker who was also injured.
Police have confirmed that shortly after 1:00 a.m. today, Sunday, 23 May, officers responded to a serious two-vehicle collision on South Church Street, in the vicinity of Palm Springs, involving a Changan CS75 and a Honda Fit.
The five occupants of the vehicles were injured in the collision. Emergency services attended the scene and all five persons were transported to the Cayman Islands Hospital.
The driver of the Honda Fit, Perkins Williams, was subsequently pronounced dead. The driver of the Changan of George Town, Kesly Ebanks Martinez, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He remains in hospital as investigations continue. The other three occupants of the vehicles also remain in the hospital.
Williams was leaving with her husband, who worked in the compliance field, to live in Arizona after he was offered a job there. She has recently tendered her resignation at the HSA and was out celebrating last night with some co-workers at local hotspot Cabana. They were planning on going on a boat cruise today before departing Cayman on Wednesday.
Originally from Aurora, Colorado she lived in Orlando, Florida since 2016 before joining American Traveler, a healthcare staffing agency to come to Grand Cayman to work.
Eyewitnesses have reported to CMR that the SUV came into their lane.
She has been described by her friends as “free-spirited with a wonderful personality and radiant smile.” They said she was very close to her parents. Her uncle took to social media to announcement the passing of his nience.
There was another Filipina nurse in the vehicle with her who sustained limb fractures and facial injuries.
