(CMR) The US will halt funding to the World Health Organization (WHO) that's according to an announcement made by President Donald Trump on Tuesday.
The President said that the decision was taken to halt funds as a review will be conducted to assess the role of the WHO in covering up the spread of the coronavirus.
“Today, I am instructing my administration to halt funding of the World Health Organization while a review is conducted, to assess to WHO's role in severely mismanaging and covering up the spread of the coronavirus,” President Trump said.
“American taxpayers provide between $400 million – $500 million per year to the WHO, in contrast, China contributes roughly $40 million and even less, as the organization's leading sponsor the United States has a duty to insist on full accountability,” Trump added.
Trump said that his administration's decision to impose a travel restriction on China saved an untold number of lives. He asserted that if other countries had taken similar steps lives could have been saved.
“One of the most dangerous and costly decisions from the WHO was its disastrous decision to oppose travel restrictions on China and other nations -and were very much opposed to what we did -fortunately I was not convinced and suspended travel from China – saving an untold number of lives, ” said Trump.
Trump said that nation's that kept their door open to China accelerated the spread of the coronavirus.
“The WHO's attack on travel restrictions put political correctness above life-saving measures, travel bans worked for the same reasons that quarantines work, pandemics depend on human to human transmission – border control is fundamental to virus control,” added Trump.
