A Cayman Marl Road tipster provided information that led to the questioning and capture of a local shoplifter less than 24 hours after the original story was posted here.
It turns out that the information they provided which was immediately handed over to the business owner, Nicola de Lima Maloir, and police have since contacted and questioned the suspect.
He attends St. Matthew Medical School and admitted to the theft and the stolen items were found in his possession. CMR sources indicate that he's an American attending St. Matthews Medical School. The school has a zero tolerance policy for students breaking the law and he may be immediately expelled from the program and can expect to be charged and eventually deported for his actions.
The owner expressed her gratitude to both CMR and the tipster who will be receiving a monetary reward. She was disappointed to hear that it was someone here on a student visa
It's rather sad that he was given an opportunity to come into our country to study and decided to commit a crime instead of focusing on his studies. Now, sadly the consequences for his actions will have far reaching repercussions. I am appreciative of this community effort that led to the almost immediate capture of the suspect.
The incident originally took place over a week ago and the footage had been circulated both by Camana Bay and the police without much success. However, after Cayman Marl Road reached out to assist the resolution was swift.
On island marketing manager, Sandra Hill, noted:
This is a powerful example of both social media and the overall popularity of Cayman Marl Road. CMR has quickly established itself as a force to be reckoned with. Our views are both loyal and knowledgeable and willing to assist where they can.
The tipster who wishes to remain anonymous was all to eager to assist and stated that:
Immigration should revoke his visa even if the school keeps him. We really do not need people like that here. I just truly felt the hurt of the business owner as she spoke in the article on CMR and I felt that something should be done to punish such dishonesty.
