(CMR) The Pasco Sheriff’s Office in Florida believes that a scammer may be hiding out here in the Cayman Islands.
Joseph Burke is accused of scamming a man out of $100,000 in a property transaction. Burke took the money as a deposit on the sale of his home in Hudson, FL despite the fact that another family had already legally purchased it.
The victim, who happens to be a disabled veteran provided two checks in the amounts of $80,000 and $20,000. The money was part of a disability settlement he received. Detectives say this was the victim’s settlement money from a plane crash he was in while in the Navy. He did not have any receipts or a contract for the down payments.
Soon after Burke stopped taking his phone calls and disappeared; deputies believe he could be in the Cayman Islands.
They’re asking anyone with information on his whereabouts to call the Pasco Sheriff’s Office Crime Tips Line at 1-800-706-2488.
November 16th: RCIPS have issued the following statement
