(CMR) A Facebook post is alleging that Scott's Development is dumping debris from the removal of the Cayman Brac’s Divi Tiara Beach Resort in a local pond with endangered species. The pond is said to be the home of the brackish water tarpon and the protected whistling ducks and the only one of its kind there.
On Thursday CMR posted an exclusive story that the long abandoned resort was finally being demolished. The post has received significant outrage and numerous comments from people on all three islands who are outraged that the environment was being abused in such a manner.
The West Indian Whistling Duck is classed as a vulnerable species: its range is confined to the Cayman Islands, the Greater Antilles, and the Bahamas
The West Indian Whistling Duck is the largest of the eight species of Whistling Duck to be found in the world. The first recorded sightings of the West Indian Whistling Duck in the Cayman Islands were made in 1916 by T.M. Savage-English. The duck's natural predators are few and hunting them is illegal.
Some posted tagged the CI National Trust as well as made contact with the Department of Environment. Despite this we understand that is not a protected pond.
