(CMR) Governor of the Cayman Islands Martyn Roper was among persons who participated in Car-Free Week from March 22 to 26.
Governor Roper said his staff also participated in the civil service initiative as part of the National Energy Policy Initiative for the Cayman Islands.
“Yesterday I carpooled with the Deputy Governor, Franz Manderson, and today I caught the bus from Government House, which according to my long-serving drivers, is the first time a Governor has caught the bus to work,” Roper posted on his FaceBook page earlier this week.
He encouraged everyone to work together to reduce harmful emissions, traffic, congestion and make more efforts to conserve energy and the environment.
The National Energy Policy initiative, organized by the Ministry of Commerce, Planning and Infrastructure, aims to create awareness of alternative transportation modes to aid in energy conservation and reduce harmful emissions and traffic congestion.
Car-Free Week is an extension of Car Free Day, which the Ministry led in 2019, to encourage civil and public servants to get carpool, take the bus, ride or walk.
Last year, the Ministry of Commerce, Planning and Infrastructure piloted a hop-on-hop-off George Town shuttle service through its National Energy Policy and George Town Revitalisation Initiative to help reduce the number of cars going in out of the central business district.
In addition to the shuttle service, the Ministry partnered with Cycle Cayman to provide bicycles for civil servants as part of a free three-month trial BikeShare program.
