(CMR) Cayman residents reported feeling an earthquake in the early morning hours. Reports confirm that a 5.0 magnitude earthquake hit the Cayman area shortly after 1:00 am last night. Multiple persons contacted us indicated the event lasted for about 10 seconds but could be felt by them.

Some residents slept through the event and only became aware of it upon seeing comments from others. Others were disappointed that our reporting agency did not advise residents until hours after the event.
The United States Geological Survey reported that a magnitude 5 earthquake occurred at 1:12 am about 47 miles east southeast of East End, at a depth of 6.2 miles.
