(CMR) Doyan Vassell, 40, a Broward, Florida man charged with premeditated murder was once a Cayman resident.
Exclusive Cayman Marl Road sources indicate that he resided here and was married to a Caymanian before leaving the island in 2013. He is believed to have worked in the scrap metal industry here.
Vassell was apprehended by a fugitive task force on Sunday at about 7:46 a.m., at Caribbean Airlines at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport's departure lounge. His destination was not immediately known.
Vassel was arrested on a warrant for a shooting that was reported on Saturday at a Shell gas station in Fort Launderdale. Witnesses told police that a black SUV drove into the crowded gas station and three men exited the vehicle eventually shooting the victim. Cellphone video shows the victim, identified as Gerald Gibson, 46, lying on the ground. Witnesses said Gibson was shot in the head.
A second unidentified man who was selling CDs at the gas station was also shot, authorities said. That man suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Apparently the two other men involved in the incident are still at large. The incident, which was partly captured on security video, shocked the owners of the gas station. He was denied bond. Vassell isn’t believed to be the shooter but instead, the person who drove the shooter to the scene.
Surveillance video shows the Saturday afternoon shooting. Three men could be seen getting out of what looks like a black Ford Expedition at the Shell gas station located at 880 W. Sunrise Blvd. The men, who all appear to be armed, are seen approaching Gibson and talking to him before one of them strikes him in the back of the head. One of the men then opened fire on Gibson, killing him.
The victim’s family said they cannot imagine why someone would do this to him. “No enemies. He was a happy person, always smiling,” said Gibson’s cousin, April Bell.
An investigation continues in the case, including a possible motive. Police said Monday they don’t have the video or any images to release. They ask anyone with information about the killing of Gibson to call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477 or online at www.browardcrimestoppers.org.
The organization pays up to $3,000 for information that leads to an arrest.
