(CMR) Ezzard Miller (NS) has tendered his resignation as Opposition Leader to the governor.
Reports are reaching Cayman Marl Road that in his letter to Governor Martyn Roper he will be officially stepping down at the end of May. He had stated that recent events including the resignation of his former Deputy Leader, Alva Suckoo (Newlands) led to the decision. He noted:
“effectively performing this role demands dedication on the part of a committed team”, and despite his best efforts, it was clear that was not possible, “given the current slate of independent members who had made up the group”.
CMR understands that no one was willing to take on the role of deputy leader and despite no public statement from the remaining members; it was clear that they did not offer their support to Miller.
A number of other issues have been keeping the Opposition Leader occupied including the formation of a new political party; which saw little support from the other opposition members.
CMR broke the news on March 22 that Suckoo had tendered his resignation effectively immediately. Sources indicated that he was promised the leadership role after 18 months but that had never materialized and many were beginning to feel the tension of broken promises.
Miller will now focus on his constituency and party formation.
