(CMR) Three people were killed, and at least six others were injured when a gunman fired shots at fans at a football game in Old Habour, Jamaica, Sunday afternoon. Reports are that a dispute over missing illegal guns was the motive behind the attack.
Reports are that at about 4:45 pm, a Toyota Mark X and a Nissan Tiida drove up, and a man alighted from one of the vehicles. He brandished a gun and fired several shots into the crowd.
Three people, Tamara Ebanks, Jerome Squire, and a man identified only as ‘Curry', were killed. Six others were taken to hospital where they were admitted in serious condition.
“It is my information that the target was one of the deceased by the name of ‘Squire' who was targeted for illegal weapons that went missing,” deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Fitz Bailey told local media.
A licensed firearm holder at the match reportedly challenged the gunmen who fled.
Up to September 7, 1,055 people were murdered in Jamaica, a 7.4 percent increase in the country’s homicide tally when compared to 2021. For the corresponding period in 2021, there were 73 fewer murders, the Jamaica Constabulary Force reported.
