(CMR) Two men attempted to rob Caribbean Jewelry's in The Duty Free Centre in central George Town, yesterday afternoon around 2:30 pm. The brazen attempt took place directly across from the Court House; where police officers and multiple security guards are stationed.
The busy intersection and building also house Star 92. FM and other local retailers and food stores. It is also mere steps away from local banks, coffee shops, and the Legislative Assembly.
The two unarmed men can be seen taunting the sales clerk at the beginning of the interaction; which lasted an entire 18 minutes. At one point the clerk can be observed trying to call for help and also attempting to block their ability to leave the store. One man put quite a few heavy necklaces in his pocket; while the other one distracted the clerk.
They can then be seen pulling on her and getting her to move from the door; before throwing the necklaces on the ground as they made a hasty getaway.
The two men are described as tall and slender and had a Jamaican accent. One had a cup in his hand; possibly from a local fast food restaurant in the area. One was wearing a black hoodie with red pants. The other one is wearing a red hat and long dark pants. The sales clerk says that he has been in the store before – about a month previously. Apparently, he visited the store and pretended to be interested in purchasing a necklace and even tried on a few pieces. She is certain that she can identify him if seen again.
The owners have shared that as a local Caymanian business it's difficult to deal with these situations knowing that for the past six years they have provided such excellent service to the local community – often offering discounts and layaway options.
