(CMR) Ten people aboard a Norwegian Cruise Line ship approaching New Orleans have tested positive for COVID-19. Officials said Saturday, the Norwegian Breakaway, which departed New Orleans on 28 November, had more than 3,200 people on board.
The ship, which was due to return this weekend, made stops in Belize, Honduras, and Mexico.
Norwegian said the cruise ship “has been adhering to appropriate quarantine and isolation protocols as new cases and exposures have been identified aboard this vessel.”
Before disembarking in New Orleans, each person on board will be tested for the coronavirus. Officials said that anyone who tests positive would either go directly home or self-isolate in accommodations provided by the cruise line.
The conditions of those who have contracted the virus have not been revealed.
The cruise industry got a major hit with the coronavirus pandemic, resulting in a major shutdown for more than a year. Cruise ships were an early source of outbreaks in the pandemic. Some ships were even rejected at ports, and passengers were forced into quarantine. COVID-19 related deaths were also recorded on cruise ships.
