(CMR) A 2007 Audi was set ablaze in the early morning hours at a residence in Bodden Town.
In a CMR exclusive we can confirm that the victim had contacted us with concerns that the RCIPS were not taking her complaints seriously about a family member that had threatened her. The incident revolves around a dispute over a cellular phone and despite allegedly being threatened in the presence of a police officer the victim claims the Bodden Town police have refused to arrest the accused on those charges.
Just last week the victim expressed to us that she has serious concerns about her personal safety after the windshield of the same vehicle was smashed in with a rock. This incident followed weeks of a family dispute with one young man. She explains that her family member had only been on island for about 9 months and she is his only relative here. However, he has since exhibited behavior that has made her increasing concerned and so she asked him to move out of her residence and return some personal items to her including a loaned cellular phone. From that point, the situation increasing escalated with several verbal altercations and most recently the damage to her car.
She futher claims that up until that point the police exhibited a nonchalant attitude towards her and were refusing to arrest this relative on that charge. Eventually they arrested him for insulting the modesty of a woman for profane language he used towards her. She also had concerns that the police officer handling the situation is actually friends with the relative on social media. She has also given the police several statements and they have allegedly refused to take the precise statement as she has given it telling her that there are certain things she did not see and they could not include in the statement.
The victim is distraught and had contacted us on advice on how she could get a more senior person on the police force to look into the matter:
“His mother begged me to help him come to Cayman because she feared for his safety in Jamaica and now I can see that there was a reason for that. He obviously had behavioral issues and was hanging with the wrong crowd and now that continues.”
Note: CMR will update this story once the police have issued a formal statement.
