(CMR) With a third wave of the coronavirus now wreaking havoc in India, the US government has taken the decision to restrict travel from the country.
The new policy, which bans travel of non-US residents, which is being implemented on the advice of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, will come into effect on Tuesday, May 4.
US citizens are advised against traveling to India at this time, and those currently in India were urged to leave.
US citizens, residents, and others who are exempted from the ban traveling from India must still test negative prior to leaving the country, quarantine if they have not been vaccinated, and test negative again upon reentering the US from India.
The COVID-19 spike in India has worsened tremendously over the past weeks, with hospitals out of supply and space and numerous people dying. New coronavirus cases in the country have skyrocketed to more than 380,000 in a single day. The country reported nearly 3,500 deaths on Friday, and some health professionals alleged that local officials had pressured them to under-report COVID-19 deaths.
Countries such as Canada and Pakistan have also banned travel from India.
