(CMR) The Cayman Islands recorded a new record number of six new cases today – all travelers.
This figure in twenty-four hours has many in the community concerned after it was revealed by community members that 19-year-old Aaron Montemayor was seen by eyewitnesses at a nightclub vaping, asking for a ride home and even at the gas station last week Thursday.
Some persons have contacted CMR to indicate that despite being exposed to him they have been afraid to get tested for the virus. This has raised alarms of possible community spread of the virus over the Christmas holidays.
Despite these shocking details, the government has confirmed that they are not investigation any additional breaches by the young man at this time and are only aware of the two previously mentioned. They have also confirmed that they have completed their contact tracing.
It remains to be seen what the courts will do with the young man after Justice Chapple sent two other quarantine breachers to jail for four months on Tuesday morning. Many speculate that the college student will get the benefit of some arguments about his mental capacity to understand and follow rules.
Members of the public who came in contact with him and have not heard from Public Health should contact them directly for further instructions.
The Chief Medical Officer, Dr. John Lee, reports that 394 COVID-19 tests have been carried out since this was last reported on Tuesday, 15 December 2020. Six were positive.
The individuals are asymptomatic travelers who returned positive test results following routine screening. They will remain in isolation until considered recovered.
The number of people in isolation, either at a government facility or in their homes as required by the Medical Officer of Health, is 1,438.
