UPDATE: Patrick Campbel (18)of North Side, who was circulated as wanted by the police and arrested on 12 April, has now been formally charged with Assault GBH in relation to a fight that took place on Market Street, George Town, on Saturday, 16 March, where a man was assaulted with a bladed weapon.
(CMR) CMR received reports late Saturday evening of a “chopping incident” at Camana Bay. Responding to a media query, senior communications manager Ben Meade confirmed that there was an “isolated incident” that took place earlier in the evening involving two people, leaving one injured.
The statement further confirmed that the Camana Bay security team responded immediately, rendering assistance to the injured person and contacting the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS). Within minutes, the RCIPS were on the scene and took over treatment until Emergency Medical Services arrived.
CMR exclusive sources revealed that the dispute was between two half-brothers and occurred in front of a local restaurant in the popular community complex's main town center. An eyewitness shared that the firearm response unit was in attendance.
The injured man was rendered first aid by security and police officers, following which he was transported to the hospital by ambulance, where he was treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries and later released.
The other involved party fled the scene prior to the police arrival, however, a weapon believed to have been used to carry out the assault was located and recovered as evidence. No other injuries have been reported to the police as a result of this incident.
While the age of these men is not known, Camana Bay has struggled with unsupervised youngsters, causing disturbances in the past and fighting. In May 2023, they implemented a ban on unsupervised minors after several fights caused concern for the management and security at the facility.
The ban received widespread community support, with one parent sharing with CMR that her son's assault caused her great distress.
We cannot comment any further at this time; the incident is currently being investigated by the RCIPS and Camana Bay security is working with the RCIPS.
This is the second “chopping incident” that the police attended after it was reported that earlier on Saturday morning, there was another chopping incident in central George Town.
The incident is being investigated by the police and detectives are seeking witnesses to this incident to assist in the investigation. Anyone with information is encouraged to call the George Town Police Station at 949-4222.
