(CMR) Richard Lincoln Reid Jr. (18), who was charged in three robberies that occurred in 2022, was sentenced to 60 months or 5 years in prison last week. He was also sentenced to 30 months for possession of an imitation firearm, with the sentences to run concurrently.
Last year when Reid came before the Grand Court to answer to the charges, it was revealed that he was only 17 years old.
Reid was sentenced by Justice Cheryll Richards, who said only a custodial sentençe is suitable to protect both the public and Reid, as he has a history of not responding well to noncustodial sentences.
In handing down the sentence, Justice Richards said she considered several mitigating factors, which included Reid's age at the time of the offenses. She also considered that at 10 years old, Reid experienced the divorce of his parents and faced abuse in the home. She also considered that Reid is a young father and that he suffers from attention deficit disorder.
Reid reportedly robbed a small business at gunpoint and multiple victims after they used an ATM to withdraw money, with the robberies taking place over several hours. Justice Richards said Reid's prolonged effort to obtain money was taken into consideration when handing down the sentence.
Reid is to go back to court on March 1 in relation to another matter.
