(CMR) Jamaican national Robert Christopher Girvan (62), who was sentenced to eight years in prison in the Cayman Islands for a $19 million investment fraud in 2010, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the United States last week amid reports of a criminal investigation into another of his schemes.
Girvan reportedly died from the gunshot wound in the backyard of his girlfriend’s home in Alpharetta, Georgia, on 12 February.
At the time of his death, Girvan was reportedly being investigated for another suspected fraudulent scheme whose investors included members of veterans organization, American Legion.
In 2010, Girvan pleaded guilty to over 21 counts of theft, fraud, and money laundering in relation to offenses that occurred between 2004 and 2008 while he worked as a trader and director of various companies.
During his 2010 sentencing, he was ordered deported back to Jamaica after he served time in prison. After his release, he migrated to the United States, where he reportedly continued to carry out fraudulent schemes.
