(CMR) The Ministry of Education (MoE) has announced a one-time grant of $1,200.00 to children receiving funding through the Early Childhood Assistance Programme (ECAP). This initiative aims to directly alleviate financial strain on 120 vulnerable families by covering at least one month of tuition fees at registered early childhood centers.
“Recognising the challenges families face in affording quality early childhood education, this grant is a tangible commitment from our government to support those most in need and ensure equitable access to critical early learning opportunities. Investing in a robust foundation through early childhood education isn't just for our children's future, it's for the future of our entire nation,” stated Premier and Minister for Education Hon. Juliana O'Connor-Connolly.
The ECAP is open to Caymanian children who turn three years old before 1 September of each year and meet specific financial means testing requirements. Under this program, eligible parents/guardians receive assistance with the payment of fees of up to $500.00 per month to early childhood centers.
The $1,200.00 grant will be disbursed this month and directly credited to children's accounts at their registered early childhood care centers. Any surplus funds can be used towards tuition fees in 2024.
The Ministry of Education will disseminate information to parents and ECCE centres about the grant payment and procedures.
“By assisting parents to clear any outstanding early childhood centre balances or build credit for next year, we also allow them to focus on providing a nurturing and supportive environment for their children, which is essential for optimal early childhood development,” said the Minister.
For transparency and monitoring purposes, the MoE asks parents to provide proof of the amount owed to their children’s early childhood center. The Ministry will track monthly balances and notify parents when their credit is depleted, ensuring a smooth transition back to regular payments.
“We are committed to ensuring this initiative benefits families effectively and responsibly. We believe this one-time grant will make a significant difference in the lives of vulnerable families and support their crucial role in nurturing the next generationO’Connor-Connolly concluded. “
