(CMR) Sir Alden Mclaughlin is now officially the Speaker of Parliament for the Cayman Islands after he was nominated unopposed for the position on Thursday.
He was sworn in by Governor Jane Owen, who congratulated him on his new role. Members from the newly formed United People's Movement and The Progressives also congratulated him
Addressing fellow Members of Parliaments, McLaughlin said, “it's time for a restart to try again to give the country a mature, stable government.
He is the third speaker since the beginning of this term, which started following the general election in 2021. Mclaughlin said it is his prayer that stability remains until the next election is due.
“The Speaker belongs to the Parliament; the Speaker's allegiance is to the Parliament. The speaker's role requires him or her to be objective and unbiased in presiding in Parliament,” he said.
“I promise you I will conduct the affairs of this high office without fear, without favor, without regard to political affiliations,” McLaughlin added.
He further stated that he had not left the Progressives party but assumed the independent role of Speaker for love of country.
