(CMR) Former Premier and member of the Progressives Sir Alden McLaughlin is expected to be voted the Speaker of Parliament at a special meeting to be held this Thursday, 23 November.
The meeting, which has reportedly been called by Premier Julianna O'Connor-Connolly, is expected to start at 10 a.m.
“I have decided to accept the nomination as Speaker for the same reason I entered politics more than 23 years ago, for love of country,” McLaughlin told a local media house on Wednesday.
Former premier Panton turned down the offer to be Speaker on Tuesday, stating that his decision “is in the best interest of the people of my community of Newlands, my country, and my family.”
