(CMR) In light of the numerous shootings and gun-related crimes across the Cayman Islands, the National Security Council will review the Firearms Act 2008 Revision to make recommendations to Cabinet on increasing the penalties for possession of firearms.
“The continued proliferation and use of illegal firearms in this country will not be tolerated, and we’re determined to limit these threats. Accordingly, the National Security Council, as of yesterday, agreed as a matter of urgency to review the Firearms Act 2008 Revision, to consider recommendations to Cabinet on increasing the penalties for possession of firearms,” Premier Wayne Panton said in a statement on the recent shootings in the Cayman Islands.
Panton said the government is concerned about the negative impact gun crimes are having on the community.
“Last Sunday evening was interrupted by reports of multiple gunshots, and while it has now been indicated by the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) that it was likely only one incident, my colleagues and I are concerned that this behavior continues to negatively impact our community,” he stated.
The Premier said, “The RCIPS, under the leadership of Commissioner Kurt Walton, has our full support, and we are confident that cases will be resolved.”
He, however, stated that success in solving these cases will depend on information from the community at large.
“If any member of the community has any information that might be helpful, I encourage you to share that information using the RCIPS confidential tip line at 949-7777,” he urged, adding that the safety of the people remains the top priority of this Government.
