(CMR) A billboard calling for immigration reform ‘now' was reportedly posted by Minister of Tourism and Ports Kenneth Bryan.
Bryan reportedly confirmed with a local media house that he posted the billboard, which reads, “Immigration reform now! To protect our country…To protect our people.”
Earlier this year, Bryan called for changes to Cayman's immigration system to protect Caymanians. He said he hoped for a review if the current points system where persons can be granted long-term residency without obligation to be granted status.
Bryan's call for immigration reform comes after the Court of Appeal ruled earlier this year that the Points System used in granting permanent residency in the Cayman Islands is unconstitutional. This means there could be an increase in the number of expatriates who can stay in Cayman beyond their rollover date due to strong family ties.
Speaking on the judgment, attorney Alastair David said, “This Judgment should not be viewed as meaning that all expatriates will be able to obtain Permanent Residence in the Cayman Islands. Subject to any legislation change, I envisage it will mean that there will be an increase in the number of expatriates who can stay past their notional rollover date on the basis of their strong family life or private life connections which they have established in the Cayman Islands.”
There have been concerns that Caymanians have not been able to access resources such as adequate housing due to the large number of expats on island. Foreigners are also believed to significantly influence other areas, such as employment, with some businesses accused of employing expats instead of locals.
