(CMR) Several flights have been delayed, while others were reportedly diverted to the Norman Manley International Airport after the Donald Sangster International Airport in St James, Jamaica, closed its runway temporarily.
The temporary closure is reportedly caused by issues with a piece of equipment during runway extension work overnight.
“At least one flight I know of has been canceled, a Frontier flight that was going to Atlanta. That flight is being canceled,” Mark Hart, Jamaica Airport Authority (AAJ) chairman, told the Jamaica Observer.
“At least six aircraft have been diverted so far from Montego Bay to Kingston. They were coming to Montego Bay, but they couldn't come here, so they were diverted to Kingston. Some of them will not come to Montego Bay; they will just leave from Kingston. Some of them may opt to wait it out and come over to Montego Bay when it opens up,” he added.
MBJ, operators of Sangster International, has apologized for the inconvenience.
“We are working to resolve the issue and will provide further updates. All departing passengers should check in for flights as normal. We apologize for the inconvenience caused and thank you in advance for your patience and understanding,” the release stated.
Recently, operations at the Norma Manley International Airport came to a standstill after a power outage. PAC Kingston Airport Limited, operators of the facility, said there was a delay in the restoration of electricity following a full-scale shutdown overnight for scheduled maintenance.
