(CMR) K9 Baron, who died last year after being left outside the George Town police compound, likely died as a result of a heat stroke, a veterinarian told the court during the first day of the trial of police constable Timothy Munroe.
Munroe was charged with cruelty to an animal after the Office of the Ombudsman submitted a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions. He is now being tried in the Summary Court in the matter.
Veterinarian Olivia Benjamin, who was Baron's vet since he arrived on island in 2017, said the K9 was in good health prior to his death.
The court heard that when the veterinarian looked at the dog after he was found dead on 9 July, rigor mortis had already set in and there was decomposition of the soft tissue which suggested the body was in the sun for some time.
The court also heard that on the day the K9 died, the heat index was between 95 and 104 degrees.
The trial is expected to resume on Friday, 7 July.
