(CMR) A Jamaican gang leader, who is now appealing a 38-year prison sentence for his role in the 2008 murder of a former state employee, reportedly arranged for a gang member who carried out the hit to be sent to the Cayman Islands to evade the police.
Tesha Miller, the alleged leader of the Klansman gang, was convicted in the Home Circuit Court in December 2019 after a trial in which a witness said that Miller had given orders and arranged for former chairman of the Jamaica Urban Transit Company Douglas Chambers to be killed and then arranged for the shooter to be sent to the Cayman Islands on a.
This ongoing court case has again brought attention to the issue of criminals migrating to the Cayman Islands. Last year several wanted men were caught here and deported back to Jamaica; the men were wanted for serious crimes including murder. In fact, one of Jamaica's most wanted men was arrested here.
In a hearing in the Jamaica Court of Appeal, Miller's lawyer said the language and tone of the trial judge impacted the fairness of the proceedings. The lawyer submitted that he was dealt an unfair trial on the basis that the defense was limited in cross-examining the crown’s witness, a former member of the Klansman gang.
The lawyer further stated that the conduct of the trial gave the jurors the impression that the court had fully thrown its support behind the crown. The matter will continue in the Appeal Court on Wednesday.
Chambers was reportedly at the JUTC depot on the afternoon of August 27, 2008, when someone called him to the gate. While he was at the gate, a group of four men opened fire on him.
