(CMR) The Ministry of Sustainability & Climate Resiliency is in the process of submitting a proposal to Cabinet for the ban of eight single-use plastic products, Premier of the Cayman Islands Wayne Panton said.
Mr. Panton, in his message for World Environment Day, celebrated today, 5 June, said, “Plastic pollution is a serious, global issue, and international cooperation is needed to address it. I am pleased to see global leaders taking steps to forge an international legally binding agreement on plastic pollution by 2024.”
“Here in the Cayman Islands, the Government is also committed to doing our part to reduce our collective consumption of single-use plastic. The Ministry of Sustainability & Climate Resiliency is in the process of submitting a proposal to Cabinet for the ban of eight single-use plastic products and we look forward to being able to share more information on this proposal in the coming weeks,” he stated.
Countries around the world celebrate World Environment Day under the theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution.’ According to the UNEP, more than 400 million tonnes of plastic is produced every year worldwide, and less than 10% is recycled.
Mr. Panton said, “Government has an important role to play in helping to address the challenges of plastic pollution, but so do individuals and private organizations.”
He further stated that “World Environment Day 2023 is a reminder that people’s actions on plastic pollution matter. Every day, we can choose to refuse single-use plastic, choose reusable alternatives instead, recycle and reuse items wherever possible, and dispose of waste responsibly and lawfully.”
“We can all be part of the solution to plastic pollution. Together, we can protect our beautiful Cayman Islands,” Mr. Panton said.
Last year, The Premier announced that the PACT Government was moving to ban single-use plastic. This proposal is expected to move this promise closer to reality,
