(CMR) Following reports of heavy smoke emitting from the George Town landfill on Wednesday, the Cayman Islands Fire Service (CIFS) and the Department of Environmental Health (DEH) are working together to saturate/dampen the area of concern.
This will be done throughout the remainder of this evening and into tomorrow as a precautionary measure.
CIFS responded at 8.50 a.m. yesterday,1 February, to a 911 report of heavy smoke emitting from an area at the George Town Landfill.
On arrival, CIFS confirmed that there was visible smoke seen with no open flames. After conducting an assessment, CIFS crews confirmed that the heavy smoke was emitting from a heap approximately 10ft by 10ft, and light smoke was emitting from two additional surrounding areas.
The three areas of concern are being saturated/damped by CIFS crews to extinguish and prevent any potential reignition or spread.
CIFS has confirmed that, at this time, there is no threat to the public or adjoining properties.
