(CMR) A dog stepped on a rifle, shooting and killing its owner in a bizarre hunting accident in the US on Saturday. Joseph Austin Smith (32) of Wichita, Kansas, was shot in the back inside a pickup truck in Geuda Springs, police said.
The Kansas native was reportedly driving when the dog stepped on the rifle in the back seat of the vehicle, causing it to discharge in his direction.
According to TMZ, cops responded to the area within minutes of a call that Smith had been shot. They started CPR immediately, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
It's unclear if anyone else was in the vehicle at the time or if the animal was harmed at all in the process.
Last year, a similar accident happened in Turkey when a new dad was shot dead by his dog after the pet stepped on the trigger of his gun. According to the UK Mirror, Ozgur Gevrekoglu was on a hunting trip with friends, and the incident reportedly occurred as he packed up his gear.
