(CMR) Edree Fisher, a former Customs and Border Control officer who pleaded guilty to conspiring to import more than six pounds of ganja into Cayman through the airport in 2018, was sentenced to nine months in prison on Wednesday, 18 January.
Fisher, who was reportedly caught on her fifth such mission, was arrested in 2018 along with several others; however she was not charged until 2021. She was charged with one count of conspiracy to import a controlled drug into the Cayman Islands.
At first, she denied the allegations; however, last year, just before her trial was set to begin she changed her plea to guilty.
Justice Marlene Carter initially sentenced Fisher to 18 months in prison; however, the sentence was reduced due to mitigating circumstances which included that Fisher is the primary caregiver of two young children.
In sentencing Fisher, Justice Carter said she abused her position of trust and power as a customs officer. She also noted that Fisher played a leading role in smuggling ganja through the airport using her intimate knowledge of the CBC’s procedures to ensure seamless entry of the drugs.
