Wife of convicted cop has appeal dismissed month after his

(CMR) In an amazing twist of fate, a Jamaican couple both convicted of separate dishonesty offenses have now both had their appeals dismissed by the Court of Appeal.

Convicted thief Cavenna Ellis (38) appealed her February 2018 conviction for theft of CI$57,872.99 and making a false document where she was sentenced to three years nine months' imprisonment. Representing herself in the matter she appealed both the conviction for the second time. Her appeal against both the conviction and the sentence was denied last month by the Cout of Appeal.

On a previous appeal before Acting Grand Court Justice Brooks, her sentence for making a false document was reduced to two years' imprisonment to run concurrently because Magistrate Gunn imposed a sentence in excess of the statutory maximum. He dismissed the appeal against conviction.

Ellis was accused of stealing money from a telecommunications company, Logic's deposit bag between May and June 2013 when she worked in the office as an office administrator and accounting assistant. To cover up the thefts she forged bank deposit slips and used thefts from later thefts to hide ones previously committed.

She admitted to the thefts but claimed that could have stolen the money and attempted to retract her previous confessions to both the police and her employer.

Ellis previously fired her attorney, Brady, and blamed him for her “wrongful conviction”. Now representing herself at the Court of Appeal level she claimed that Magistrate Gun erred in her findings of fact which is not permissible. One can only appeal on a point of law, not on a question of fact.

The court found that the case against her was “strong' and dismissed her appeal.

Ellis is the wife of disgraced former cop Daniel Ezra Meeks (35) how was convicted in 2020 for attempting to swindle a 71-year-old Caymanian pensioner out of her home during the course of his duty as a police officer. Meeks was sentenced to a similar period of three years for misconduct. The couple has young twins that were turned to Jamaica after their convictions.

He also appealed his conviction and three-year sentence in April 2020 but the judges found it was “wholly without merit” and dismissed it.
