(CMR) Just days after the government kicked off their vaccination campaign a false voice note is being heavily circulated on WhatsApp from an unidentified Caymanian lady claiming that she has been advised by “health care” that front line workers and those over 60 will have to be taking the shot “every three months”. She warned that this is for “all you guys eager to get the shot”.
It goes on further to say that everyone else will have to take the shot every six months so “get your arms ready”.
This message goes directly against what the government has been encouraging people to do which is take advantage of the vaccination program so that the Cayman Islands can safely re-open its borders.
The general public may wish to remember that the spreading of fake information is a criminal offense in the Cayman Islands. One, which during the COVID-19 lockdown the police were prepared to enforce.
Meanwhile, HE The Governor Martyn Roper shared a Royal Gazette article today which confirmed that the vast majority of people who are now being admitted to the hospital with COVID-19 have been unvaccinated persons. The Bermuda Hospital Board has noted that 81 patients treated from March 14 to May 1 had not been vaccinated. 10 of the 81 persons have only received one of the two required doses and only one person had received both doses.
The hospitalization of the one person was still within the two-week period which means that full immunity had not yet been reached.
Dr. Miller pointed to their overall numbers being indicative of some protection being offered even with one dose of the vaccination:
“With a significant portion of the population now either fully vaccinated or having had one shot, that these people make up such a small proportion of hospitalisations indicates that there is a protective effect even before you reach full immunity, which is two weeks after your second shot.”
The governor shared the good news as proof that vaccination programs work.
The local government continues to fight against misinformation in the local community about the vaccine. So far, in clinical trials from the UK it appears that there is a 76% reduction in COVID-19 transmission after the first dose and an 82% reduction after the 2nd dose.
Experts cannot say how long the protection will last from the vaccine as they continue to study vaccinated persons around the world. However, Pfizer's ongoing trial indicates thus far that it is “highly effective for at least six months” and possibly longer. They speculate it may offer protection for about a year.
