(CMR) As the World's death toll from COVID-19 hits 3 million on Saturday, Brazil continues to see devastating effects with up to 3,000 deaths each day.
One WHO official has likened the crisis in Brazil to a “blazing inferno” as crucial medications used for treating gravely ill COVID-19 patients is running short. Hospitals are running out of critical sedatives and there have been reports of some doctors diluting remaining supplies remain and even tying patients to their beds while breathing tubes are pushed down their throats.
Occupancy of the country's hospitals ICU units has remain critical in most of Brazil, according to a recently issued bulletin which indicated that 16 of Brazil's 26 states have ICU bed occupancy levels of 90% or above.
The COVID-19 surge in Brazil is reportedly driven by the highly-infectious P-1 strain that was first detected in that country. The government response to the pandemic has also been blamed for the surge in the coronavirus cases in that country.
Brazil is leading the world in the daily average number of new deaths reported and accounts for one in every four deaths worldwide each day, Reuters said.
According to Reuters, it took more than a year for the global coronavirus death toll to reach 2 million. The next 1 million deaths were added in about three months.
