(CMR) Jamaican traveler Stephany Clarke (29) was sentenced to four months in jail today after she was found guilty of traveling into the Cayman Islands on September 9, 2021 knowing that she was COVID positive. Magistrate Hernandez remitted her to Fairbanks prison immediately.
Clarke was charged in November for failing to comply with COVID-19 control regulations when she arrived in Grand Cayman with a COVID positive test. She was somehow able to pass two checkpoints with Cayman Airways before boarding the plane. It was only upon her arrival that a CBC agent noticed the positive test result.
The community was shocked that she was permitted to travel on a flight from Kingston, Jamaica to Grand Cayman despite being positive for the virus. Travelers who have a positive coronavirus test were not permitted to enter the island pursuant to the COVID-19 regulations. On arrival here, however, the positive result was spotted and she and her travelling companion, who had a negative test, were both placed into government quarantine.
She was said at the time to be symptomatic at the time and all 84 passengers on Cayman Airways flight KX605 had their mandatory quarantine period extended and were monitored closely after it was discovered that the woman who tested positive for COVID-19 was allowed on the flight.
The court heard how Clarke was in Cayman as a visitor after her initial employer canceled her work permit and she has been here as a visitor since then. She may not be able to remain in the Cayman Islands after her sentence. Clarke is from Browns Town, Saint Ann, Jamaica.
