(CMR) Lelieth Monique Welcome-Campbell (36) was sentenced to 19 months in prison for grievous bodily harm after she admitted to attacking a woman when she found him sitting on the woman’s lap.
The incident occurred in July at a local restaurant that Welcome-Campbell and her husband owned. Welcome attacked her with a meat cleaver; chopping her in her head.
Her lawyer argued that the mother of eight has mental and personality disorders. The social inquiry report also revealed Welcome had a difficult childhood and was beaten with objects like a mop stick, broomstick, barbed wire and frying pans. Her mother would beat her in the bathtub and step on her throat at the same time.
However, with 29 previous convictions including being on a suspended sentence at the time, the judge felt imprisonment was warranted.
The judge admitted the difficulty of his decision and heard from the 29-year-old victim via her impact statement. She shared that she has a permanent scar with many in the community knowing how she received it.
Welcome received credit for her early guilty plea and a 30-month sentenced was reduced down to 19-months. Welcome has been incarcerated since July and will have that time served counted towards her sentence.
