Sadly, most women can relate to being objectified and having to deal with some form of sexual assault in the workplace. Sadly, speaking out means that you will also have to prepare to sever he employment relationship. In this case your employer saved you the trouble and did it for you.
It is even more difficult when you work in a bar as sadly most people assume that all barmaids are here to prostitute and make money on the side for sexual favors. This underbelly of the Cayman Islands exists and we know that some bars are operation as illegal brothels under the umbrella of a bar.
Some of the men in the highest social echelons of this community are known to frequent such establishments and have a concubine of women at their disposal. Despite this being prostitution and illegal – it happens. It’s a dirty open secret in this country. This leads to the assumption that anyone who works in a bar must be fully aware of the arrangement and that sex is a part of their job description (unofficially).
Bar owners target women from poorer countries and pay them non-livable wages so that they must augment this with tips or additional sources of income. For most that means selling the only commodity they have – their bodies! Some employers are known to tell their workers they need to be “friendly” with the patrons and make them happy. There have been allegations that some are running full prostitution rings and the girls give them a portion of the money they make from sex with clients – essentially operating as a pimp.
Barmaids needs to start speaking out if they are not in favour of this practice.
We would suggest writing to Immigration, the Department of Commerce and Investment (DCI) as well as filing a report with the RCIPS. Immigration has the power to flag this person in their system as a rogue employer and consider this information when looking at future applications for employees.
DCI should likewise be able to consider revoking his liquor license as well as other sanctions relating to the issuance of said license.
